For SFM's David Wise, ActivAcre is as much about how trees can complement and enhance farming practices as it is about planting them.
"If you're a sheep farmer, we've got to understand your livestock systems and be able to integrate the program effectively," he said.
"We will learn what you're trying to achieve with your farming systems and enterprise, rather than a blunt approach of saying 'Here's the trees and this is what you need to do.'"
The Executive Director brings with him close to three decades of experience in the forestry industry.
David studied an Advanced Diploma of Applied Science in Agriculture at the University of Melbourne before returning to Hobart and completing an economics degree.
He's farmed cattle and sheep in southern Tasmania and has seen the benefits first-hand from an integrated, trees on farms approach to existing practices.
"It's integrating nature into the landscape and the highest and best use of agricultural systems," he said.
"It's quite sensitive to the economics of land use, soil types, rainfall and livestock and cropping systems. It's quite prevalent in the way it's put together.
"It's a good way to generate extra income and get the benefits of having trees on farms in an integrated manner."
